#39 on my List is to watch all of the Oscar Winners for Best Foreign Film from 1980 till present.
A couple of nights ago, I saw Kolya (Kolja, Czech Republic, 1996). The movie, set in Prague on the eve of the Velvet Revolution, is about a relationship between a six year old Russian refugee and a middle aged Czech cellist who comes to be his guardian.
Zdenek Severak as Louka, a crusty, womanizing, bachelor is charming and reminded me a lot of Sean Connery. Andrej Chalimon plays Kolya with an innocence tinged with pathos and its difficult not to loose your heart to him. Beautifully photographed, the film is charming, sweet, gentle and lovely.
